An exclusive and rare encounter with Ibiyemi
My name is Awotiwon Ibiyemi Joseph. I’m vying for the post of the president of the STUDENT Union.
I’m a student of the Faculty of Law. A part 4 student.
*Previous political position/achievement(s)*
One time Angola Hall chairman (2013/2014) session.
I also contested for the post of the General-secretary of the SU. And during this time was when I had the saga with Hon. Seun on the issue of 2.5CGPA. We were 4 that contested even though Hon. Seun never met the required CGPA.
*Some Enlightenment on the saga*
Alot of people have issues with me because of what happened that time. At that time, my opinion was that, at that time we got a form and you’ve been asked that you need 2.5CGPA in order to contest and on that basis claiming that you have up to that, in law as soon as you attest your signature there, it means you’ve accepted to the terms of the agreement. I got to know that he didn’t meet you the 2.5CGPA a day before election, but it’s none of my business because there was no evidence. I couldn’t ask him for his result and tell him I want to use it as evidence against him. Election came, he won, I conceded and wished him the very best. About two to three weeks later, I got a call on phone to check the great Ife page and I saw his result there, after calculations, I found out that he didn’t meet up the 2.5CGPA minimum requirement. I had to appeal and the judgment was given in my favour. But he still retained office, I don’t know why, but what I fought for around that time was justice. That was all that happened then
*Any faculty position*
Class Pastor( that was before my political career). During my first year, I was the football coach. I still act in the capacity as a Pastor. I told my CLASFON president he said I can go ahead with it. I’m presently the assistant faculty coach. I’ve not been involved in faculty politics. If I’ll be a unionist, let me be a unionist to the fullest.
*What inspired you to run for this position*
The drive to cause a change has inspired me to run for this post, the drive to make the SU a better place for all. Most people believe the union belongs to some set of people, an average student passes in front of the SUB and believes the union guys are in there. The truth is that the union belongs to us all. Who is the union? We are the union, nobody has the power/monopoly of calling himself the union. The SU is a pressure group not a government and it should serve in protecting the interests of its members. I see myself as a nation builder, that’s why our slogan for our campaign is ” the 21st century union”.
*Should you make it as the president, what should the people expect from you*
I plan to reinvest into each student. A lot of graduates are there looking for job and we are thinking how we can invest back into ourselves. We are looking into an entrepreneurship program and skill acquisition program. Maybe as a botany student, you are learning how to make shoes. We are just trying to build life for students after school.
We are also after the security of the students especially those in town the recent news of robbery outside school is bothering. Some students have been robbed and attacked.
Another thing I want to do is constitutional amendment. This will actually be my first assignment. The constitution we use today has been drafted since 1978,that’s over 38 years and we call ourselves 21st century union.
Empowerment of the judiciary and reform of the security unit. They(security unit) are to apprehend and arrest suspects and not beating people up.
Welfare, we should not think of what our management will do for us rather think of what we can do for ourselves. Imagine a SU having a source of water for each block. An example is what Ibikunle did at Angola Hall.
There are a lot of aluminis that will help the system. But we as student ourselves destroy things. The use of toilet is quite bad in some cases.
I’ll keep saying this, the management is not our enemy, do we beat our parents when they reduce our allowances? If we can’t fight our parents, we shouldn’t fight with the management, some of them have kids amongst us, some were even present at the 1999 struggle.
I’m not different from any other person as president. I’m just there to represent all our voices, I’m to stand where we all can’t stand at once. I want everyone to benefit from the union.
*Through the course of the interview, I’ve noticed that you keep using the word ” we”, who are the people you are referring to?*
After politics comes governance. The major reason why our country is in jeopardy is because after politics, we keep playing politics. When politics is over, let’s move to governance. Let’s come together after the election and remain GREAT IFE STUDENTS. That’s why I don’t say ‘I’ ’cause after the election, we’ll all be part of the SU.
*On the issue of Accidents and Speedsters*
It won’t take much to erect speed breakers. If we propose it to the management and they do nothing about it, We can do it on our own. There should be speed breakers before every zebra crossing to reduce speed and rates of accidents. Most of these accidents are not caused by students, people from town drive into school, go to new buka, get drunk and drive at high speeds. There a lot of things we can do concerning that. I’m sure wen we tell the management about it they will do something about it since it involves the lives of OAU students.
*it’s nice having you around, thanks for your time*
