I am Oyelami John Oluwabori, popularly and politically known as OYO from the faculty of EDM department of Architecture. I am a penultimate year student and I’m running for the seat of presidency of the Student Union. I got into this campus as a student in the 2013/2014 academic session. In part one, I was a union leader. I was elected in Angola hall as the director of sport. In my part two due to my vibrancy in Angola, I was elected: the the vice president of my faculty.
Inspiration behind your running for presidency
I want you to believe that the state of the union is in a coma right now. The consciousness of great Ife students is almost dead. The congress held last time, I saw about 1500 students out of possible 35000. This is not supposed to be so; whereas the congress should encompass 50%. But because every student is a financial member of this union, that is why I’m coming with a vision of redefinition and I believe I am in the best position to do that. The change in life is a change you can see in yourself.
*mStudent Union in OAU: More harm or good?
If you check the history, it is actually in recent years that SU has been doing more harm than good. The unionism of the 60s, 70s, they defended the students real interest, though recently our union leaders have been fighting for their own pockets ant its not supposed to be so. In an average level, the SU have done more good than harm.
*How will you make sure that the revival of Student Union does not continue to have negative effect on the students?*
The problem unionism has been having is decision making, then corruption, embezzlement and misappropriation. These are the things that have made students lose hope in the union totally. That is why I said the only solution is redefinition I.e we the students taking proper decision that won’t lead to strike and truncated academic calender. If decisions are made with the students and not for the student, definitely, the students will have their faith in the SU.
Most SU President have always gone against the school policies. Are you going to be any different?
The truth of the matter is , the interest of the school management and the interest of the students can never align but we can try to find an equilibrium even though the students will always want better welfare. The equilibrium can only be attained through consultation, confrontation and consolidation.
Will being the SU President pose a risk on your studentship if elected?
I believe respect is reciprocal. On this campus, I have never disrespected any student let alone the school management. The ways we approach matters matter a lot. If we give the management the respect they deserve, they in turn should give us the respect we deserve. Our student Union should have legal backing. Without this, there will be fear on our union leaders to approach issues. We can employ the services of our alumni that have gone far in this legal profession.
I will never promise great Ife students what I won’t be able to give them. First, improved academic welfare. Classes that hold before 6am or 7am is not supposed to be so. These are all what accrued to to mass failure. Again, NYSC mobilization will be improved even though the administration on prof. Elujoba has been trying. Also better transportation system. Effective student security system is another thing. Students are being robbed every other day especially those that stay in town. And so many more.
On the issue of Hit-and-run drivers
On this issue, the roads should be barricaded at night or the use of bumps should be employed.
Your unique innovation
I shall bring all leaders on campus, fellowship leaders, Muslim leaders, faculty presidents, departmental president together to be able to make decisions. It won’t be rational to stay at the SUG level and make decisions for 33000 students. Now, spiritually inclined people will now reason that this union is for everybody.
Challenges you’ve faced in the course of your campaign
Reaching out to students especially those living outside campus.
Advice to students and fellow aspirant before and after the election.
Unity. This Political journey will end someday. I want all great Ife students, before election make their choices and after election unite for a better, progressive and redefined union.
The origin of that name is actually the combination of my two names: OYelami Oluwabori and coincidentally goes with my home town. I am from Oyo town.
*mThank you for your time
